For a new artist, Christy has quite the back-story, from superstar busker to teenage leading man. But much more intriguingly, and way more interestingly, the singer, songwriter and guitarist has a killer future-story.
Don’t take his active Instagram presence (64.9k followers) nor v. busy (and funny) TikTok profile (86.1k followers, 3.1 million likes) as the only evidence. In the 70-odd songs he wrote in the period surrounding his lockdown signing to Decca lies evidence galore of the talents of a musician who’d put in his 10,000 hours on the rainy streets of central Glasgow by the time he was barely 16. After a detour that lead him to acting in Disney's Find Me In Paris, he fully embraced music, touring with Rufus Wainwright and releasing his first two EPs on Made Records.
Now, with his debut album for the storied, 100-year-old British record label Decca “97 per cent” finished, Christy is ready to kickstart the next stage of an artistic journey that’s already as varied as it is incredible as it is… well, annoyingly accomplished, frankly. Meet an artist who has tunes as chiseled as his cheekbones.
First single ‘In Denial’ is a powerful curtain-raiser for an artist who presents, already, like the sound of 2023. An ear-wormy pop singalong complete with rousing blasts of soulful trumpet that feels arena-ready, it’s a song that showcases Christy’s astonishing vocal range, from bluesy rasp to choirboy-adjacent falsetto. No wonder it got picked up by BBC1 Future Pop!, with presenter Maia Beth gushing: "This song makes mundane tasks more magical, it allows you to have that main character moment."
'In Denial' will be followed by ‘Let You Down’, another emotive belter, this one showcasing the dyslexic Christy’s self-taught skills on guitar and eight-string ukulele. In the coming months, he has a suite of other bangers waiting in the wings. Stand by for ‘(I Don’t) Love You’, a folky, amped-up throwdown; ‘Glory Days’, a soul-baring, heart-lifting anthem about the promise of new love after a toxic relationship; ‘Without You’, a delicate, acoustic ballad written and recorded in one take; and the epic ‘Hometown’.
“That’s my Killers tune,” he grins, unabashed. “Growing up, Hot Fuzz was one of my favourite albums, alongside Grace by Jeff Buckley and Chet Baker Sings – some seemingly random records that shaped me as a musician. With this song, I wanted to make it as anthemic as possible. Something that lets me jump around on stage.”
In fact, speaking of which, Christy – true to form – has a story about that.
“I’m having a glittery blazer made for me to wear onstage. That’s because I walked past this shop in Glasgow, filmed this glittery wedding dress that caught my eye, put it on TikTok, saying I was gonna wear it when I got married. It got five millions views! So the company who made it got in touch, and I went in, tried on the dress, just having a laugh, and people loved that video too. So they’re making me a blazer in that style!”
He is Christy, and watch this glittery space. He’s about to own it.
"With his sweet-as-honey tone and lyrics the only way is up for Christy going forward"
When The Horn Blows
"Christy O’Donnell is quickly rising to the top with his infectious falsetto notes and guitar licks."
Notion
"Christy is just such an incredible artist, you can hear these vocal breaks in his voice, he's so emotional. Has me reach for my tissues everytime."
BBC Introducing Scotland
"Weaving together delicate melodies with soft yet fervent vocals, it’s hard not to be stirred by Christy’s musical offerings."
